GOONDIWINDI QLD

Goondiwindi is a rural town on the border of Queensland and New South Wales.
It’s a bigger town of 6,500 people.

The name Goondiwindi comes from an Aboriginal word with Goondi, meaning droppings or dung..🙂…..and windi meaning duck……so we are now staying at
“Duck Poop” Showgrounds😂😂

It’s $25 @ night here with power and water, and we were also lucky enough to be here while the “Camp Draught” was on this afternoon.

It was really chilly in the wind, so didn’t stay long.

As the riders got the cows through the obstacles in a certain time, they were then put out to the paddock behind the ring.

And then the “cow whisperer” did his magic and they all faced forward for a photo shoot 🤣🤣🤣

(Still got shorts on)
We then drove into town for a look around. Being Sunday, it was nice and quiet.

Victoria Hotel.
The original building was a single story wooden structure with a tin roof.
Hitching posts and horse troughs flanked the then, dirt tracks.
It has been operating as a pub since 1920 when William & Margaret Pendock bought it and made a lot of changes. Every now and then they would add a room until there were 50.
The family had the pub for 30 years before selling it to Mr George Pippos.

He was a member of the syndicate who raced “Gunsynd”

Which brings me on to the famous race horse….Gunsynd…affectionately known as the Goondiwindi Grey which was bought for $1,300 at the Brisbane sales in
1969.

He had 54 starts, 29 wins, 7 seconds, 8 thirds
Prize money was $280,455, which in todays money is equivalent to over 10 million dollars.

He was such a crowd favourite, being a grey horse, had a song written about him, and when he retired, 25,000 people farewelled him .

At the age of 16 he was humanely euthanised suffering from cancer.

Sorry about the poop on the top of this sign…told you we were in “bird poop” town!…….”(Resting place of birds that Poop)

The local water tank.

And sandstone statues down by the river.

It’s a very clean town, with lots to see, so let’s hope the weather plays nice so we can see more of it.

Take care 🦋🦋
