PARKES DAY 4

Last day here at Parkes, so we are just having a last look around to see if we’ve missed anything.

We found this very impressive War Memorial.

This reinforced concrete tower sits proudly on top of Memorial Hill Lookout, and stands 33 metres high. It is absolutely huge, and at night, you can see it from where we are as it’s all lit up.

Construction of the Memorial began in the 1920’s and since then it has come to recognise multiple conflicts including WW11, Korean and Vietnam wars.
It has a long and chequered history, taking 27 years to complete.
The Memorial is the site of the Dawn Service on Anzac Day every year.

There is a concrete flagpole at each corner of the surrounding lawn

May 27th 2015 it was restored by the community of Parkes, and opened by the then Governor of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove.

Surrounding the War Memorial are remembrance  gardens and walks, honouring the fallen that lie buried in foreign lands.

And here sits Gunner Ed….contemplating …….who’s  number came up in the ballot, and was called up for National Service, to go to the Vietnam War when he was only 19 (as the song goes)
He was deferred, as we had just got married, and had a newborn……but always said, he wished he had gone. I’m glad he didn’t.

It was so quiet up on the hill,  and you could see for miles.

When we were ready to go, I spotted a large chimney in the distance, so I drove to where I thought it was a came to another hill.

This is Bushman’s Hill. It was the site of Parkes first gold mine,  which operated over 100 years ago.

It was freezing cold so we didn’t hang around long.

Instead we went into town and found this quirky coffee shop to warm up.

The Trots are on here tonight at the Showgrounds where we are.
Ed’s going for a look, but I bet he won’t be out there too long being 6 degrees later on.
Plus he’s own horse is back from a spell and is racing at Mildura tonight, so he will be listening intently to that here in the warmth of our little home. πŸ˜‰πŸ™„πŸ€¦‍♀️

We have had such a great time here, seeing the Dish again, and reading all about Sir Henry Parkes. Sometimes you just get a really nice feel for a town, and this one has certainly done that for me. 😌

Stay safe πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹

🐴🐴🐴 Ed’s horse came second. So it’s in the final next Friday. Ed was a very happy owner. 😊😊🐴🐴
