PARKES PT 2

We had a lovely day out today. We drove back 25 km, to the way we came yesterday, off the highway and down a lovely country road full of canola flowers, to a place called
“The Dish”……..CSRIO Parkes Observatory.

You can see this from the highway, and yesterday when we passed it, it was horizontal, and I wondered why?

Today I found the answer.

“Winds are a hazard. The dish acts like a huge sail, so in winds above 35 km per hour, the “telescope part”has to be stowed in an upright position and secured in place with a locking pin”. Now I know 😊😊

I was 14 and remember that happening while at school.

Amazing facts.

This dish in the distance has the ability to send sound waves to another dish behind me from where I’m taking this photo.

You whisper into one dish, and the person way over at the other dish can hear it.

We came here many years ago with Mark and Melinda when Jake, Byron & Noah were very young. They had such a good time whispering stories into one dish and sending them back to the other dish.
And yes…..I had to stand at one dish while Ed whispered “sweet nothings ❤️“ into his dish today…(yeah right) you all can imagine what was said…🀣🀣🀣

Sorry for the overload of info, but for us, it was so interesting.
And best of all…..it was coffee time….after all that information we needed a caffeine fix.

Oh it was all very yum. Best scones ever and the coffee was so nice.

It was a great day. We are staying another 2 nights or more maybe at the Showgrounds, see what the weather does.

Take care πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹
