PARKES NSW

We left the little quirky town of Eumungerie and headed south along the Newell Highway.
We stopped for a coffee in the small town of Peak Hill and needed fuel as well.

We found a Shell petrol station and thought we had won the lottery…🤣🤣🤣

$1.99 🤣🤣🤣….. sounds bloody ridiculous…..who would’ve even thought it would be a bargain at that price 🙄

So after our coffee, we headed south again and arrived at Parkes.

Parkes has a population of 11,500. In August 1873 Sir Henry Parkes visited the area and in December 1873, the town was officially named Parkes in his honour
(Sir Henry Parkes is recognised as having played an instrumental role in Australia becoming a unified and federated country)

Parkes attracted significant attention during the gold rush of 1870’s onwards, and to this day, modern mining companies have sites in the region.

In 1939, Parkes became a sister city with Coventry in the UK, Sir Henry Parkes birthplace.

Once again, we have been passing through this town for many many years, back when the kids were very young, on our way through to the Gold Coast when we lived in Victoria, but have never stayed here.

(And this town is also the town we had to pick up our hire car when our poor Jeep  broke down last year.)

So we thought it time we stopped to look around the place. We are staying in the Showgrounds here for a few days @ $25 a night, with the heater cranking!

Ed’s been out watching the trotters trialing, so he’s in his element. 🐴🐴

The Parkes Elvis Festival is an annual event celebrating the music and the legend
of Elvis Presley held in early January.
The first festival in 1993 was a one night performance attracting 300 people.
From then, it has grown to become a five day long festival of all things Elvis.

The Festival now offers more than 200 events for fans to shake, rattle and roll their way around and continues to attract more than 25,000 people to Parkes each January .

In 2019, pre pandemic, the NSW government projected an injection of $43 million into the wider region surrounding Parkes due to the festivals huge success.

😂💵💵💰💰

To be honest, I couldn’t think of anything worse than mingling in a crowd of 25,000 people, in the middle of NSW, in January with 40 degree temperatures listening to numerous renditions of “Burning Love”…🥱🥵🥵
Dressed like this……but that’s just me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Stay safe 🦋🦋
