INGLEWOOD VICTORIA.
We went off for a drive along the Calder highway today to Inglewood, which is about 30km from where we are here at Wedderburn. There’s a population of approx 730 people.

This was a very sad story..π’

There was a lot to see….and we had a great day exploring…..but it was so good to get back to the warmth of the car.
It was an important gold mining centre during the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s.
On notification of the discovery of gold, 16,000 diggers flocked to the area, and by mid 1860, the population of the field was estimated to be greater than 40,000..ranking among the biggest rushes in Victoria’s history.
Around the turn of the century, gold production diminished and a new form of employment was needed.
The eucalyptus oil industry took hold when it was discovered that the leaves of the Blue Mallee, which grew everywhere in the area, produced some of the best quality eucalyptus oil in the world, and is still in production today.
It never ceases to amaze us, what we learn about the places we visit. There is so much history, so many hidden gems, and always something different to read about π€
It wasn’t a big town, and it looked like we’d stepped back in time as all the buildings, shops and houses were so old.
There were a few shops that sold lots of old wares that looked very interesting, but it was just so damn cold, and there was no heating in them, that we didn’t stay long.π₯Ά
At the front of the local supermarket were two photos of two local boys that enlisted in the army. Very interesting.
