GOODBYE MILDURA. 31st August ‘23

We said “see you later” to all our family, and headed off back up to Tweed Heads for a while, so Ed can have his eyes fixed, so he can see properly again!

First stop was Nyah Showgrounds. 

It’s a lovely place to stop over on the River. There were quite a few of us there. 
Donation camp with no power but you can get water. 



The Murray River is such a beautiful place. 





Wood carvings along the river. 





And this hill makes me laugh every time we are here. Mark was bitten by a bee and told people he was allergic to them…..we had St John’s ambulance coming from everywhere telling us not to panic. He was ok…..it was painful for him….but he was fine. 😂😂



As old as these sawn down trees are…..there is still life in them. 

Next stop….. Swan Hill…yep another bowls club!









This is outside the infamous second home…Travellers Rest Motel ……where Ed used to stay all those many years ago when Ed worked for Dons Smallgoods. 

We had a cuppa then headed off to Kerang and stayed at the Showgrounds where we were the only ones there. 




We could walk into town from there, found an IGA, got some shopping, collected a small Tattslotto win as we were crossing the border into NSW.

We left there this morning, into NSW, and stopped for a coffee in Koondrook NSW.
What a pretty little town along the Murray River.





The River seems to be very high at the moment and there’s been issued a minor flood warning. 

There is a red gum saw mill factory here on the river. The beautiful wood from the red gum is made into some gorgeous furniture…..and the smell was so nice. 




The wood was then loaded on tram and trains and taken to Melbourne. 








All these carvings are from Redgum.



Roy Higgins, a very well known jockey came from Koondrook. 

And the local Butchers and garden.











And the local pub.





A beautiful Town.

After staying two days at Dingo, we decided we would move on. We thought the wind may have settled down a bit today, but of course…it was still blowing…so off we went to tackle it.  Luckily for us we had a great wind break all along as it was quite thick bush. 😊 So a big day driving……all of 40km 🤣…we arrived at Duaringa.  We have been here a few times before, but it’s one of our favourite camp spots.  There’s a population of 262 people.  The Dawson River is close by, and supplies Duaringa’s town water. The Dawson and MacKenzie River both join up north-east of Duaringa to form the Fitzroy River, which eventually flows through the city of Rockhampton.  A mural depicting the three rivers is painted on the back of the Duaringa Historical & Info Centre, facing the Capricorn Highway….. WANDOAN QLD

Wandoan is a lovely town in the Western Downs Region. It was formerly known as Juandah. In 1926, it was renamed Wandoan to avoid confusion with Jundah….near Longreach.  Population is 566…..with the median age of people being 38 years old! (You’d have to be young to work on this land) Travelling here through the bush, there were a lot of dead kangaroos (which isn’t unusual ) but there were loads of huge black bores dead on the road. Hate to hit one of those big buggers! There is no TV reception here, so every man and their dog has a satellite dish.🤣🤣 (Last night we stayed at the small town of Taroom….but they had no TV and no Internet!! 😳😳) Danny Deckchair made another appearance…..you kids will know what I’m talking about 🤣🤣🤣🙄 There is no rail service here,  so the old train station now houses the tourist info centre.  It’s a very interesting town.  Good doggie.. MELVILLE CAVES…..KOOYOORA STATE PARK, BRENANAH, VICTORIA.

That was a mouthful of an address, but what a magic spot it turned out to be. Melville Caves are on top of a spectacular Rocky Mountain. You follow a steep path through the park, past lots of huge boulders. And you come to this beautiful lookout. It was a stunning view. From there, you go around the huge boulders, down a path, and around to the caves.  It reminded me of the Grampians. You have to squeeze through these rocks…..then squeeze through more…. And into the caves.  The caves are called Melville Caves after a notorious bush ranger , Captain Melville, who used the caves as a hiding place and lookout, in the mid 19th century. (Born 1860-1869). He would see the coaches come through carrying the Gold, and ambush them.  So when you squeeze through that crack, you come into the cave itself.  I made Ed go through first 😂😂😂😂😳😳😳 Giving me the “all clear” 👍😂 It was so cold, and very quiet….but a nice feeling at the same time when you thought about the history ...
